Nurse leaders motivate colleagues to excel in staff interactions, create a healthy work environment, and promote excellence in patient care. There are multiple leadership styles, five of which are listed here. At times, leaders demonstrate more than one style depending on the current situation. “Memory Hints” are given for autocratic and laissez-faire styles.

Autocratic

Autocratic may also be known as authoritarian. In this style, the leader has strong control and aggressive behaviors are demonstrated. The leader makes quick decisions with little input from others. Autocratic may be the desired style of the leader or it may be used situationally in an emergency.

Democratic

Democratic is also known as participative. In this style, the group has input, the leader does the analysis, and provides several action plans for discussion. In the democratic style, the leader ultimately makes the decision. Assertive behaviors are typically demonstrated by the leader.

Laissez-Faire

Laissez-Faire is when the group has strong control and passive behaviors are demonstrated by the leader. The style may work well with experienced teams or nurses who are self-directed. At times, it is used when the leader wants to avoid conflict with the desires of the group.

Situational

Situational is a combination of styles based on the needs of the group and tasks to be completed. It is flexible and the most adaptable to situations based on the organization or individual.

Transformational

The transformational leader builds relationships and has a shared vision with staff. The leader serves as a mentor and works to inspire nurses to develop strengths and talents.

Memory Hints for Leadership Styles

• In Autocratic, the leader is Automatically in control. Aggressive behaviors are demonstrated.
• In Laissez-faire, the leader is Lazy. Passive behaviors are demonstrated.

Summary

In preparing for the NCLEX exam, knowledge of the types of leadership are beneficial in answering situational types of questions. While democratic leadership is the most common, autocratic and laissez-faire may also be seen.
